Rwanda’s tech momentum: talent, skills and global ambition converge in Kigali

Rwanda’s technology sector is gaining momentum, driven by young innovators, strategic partnerships and a growing calendar of international tech events. Together, these developments underline the country’s ambition to position itself as a regional hub for digital innovation and skills-driven growth.

That ambition is embodied by a new generation of Rwandan entrepreneurs. At just 22 years old, Jean-Luc Sauvé (co-founder and chief executive of Strettch Cloud) is a homegrown tech founder who has built a cloud computing platform now valued in the multi-million-dollar range. Developed entirely in Rwanda, the platform offers locally hosted cloud services tailored to African businesses, demonstrating that advanced digital infrastructure can be designed, built and scaled from within the continent. The success story reflects both technical talent and a supportive ecosystem that encourages innovation from an early stage.

At the same time, Rwanda is investing heavily in digital skills for the next generation. MTN Rwanda, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, has launched a nationwide programme to equip young people with practical digital competencies. The initiative focuses on coding, digital literacy and emerging technologies, helping students and graduates prepare for jobs in the digital economy while strengthening the local talent pipeline for Rwandan companies and international investors.

This growing ecosystem will be further amplified in 2026, as Kigali hosts a series of major technology events. From innovation summits and startup conferences to AI, fintech and digital transformation forums, at least six key tech gatherings are scheduled to take place in the capital. These events will attract entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers and researchers from across Africa and beyond, reinforcing Kigali’s role as a meeting point for ideas, capital and collaboration.

Taken together, these developments tell a clear story. Rwanda is not only consuming technology, but actively creating it; through local innovation, skills development and global engagement. For businesses, investors and partners, Rwanda’s tech sector offers a compelling mix of talent, vision and opportunity, firmly rooted in a Made-in-Rwanda approach to digital growth.
