Red Rocks Festival expands Rwanda’s community tourism story

Rwanda’s Red Rocks Cultural Festival will return to Musanze from 28 August to 4 September 2026 with a wider programme built around culture, conservation and community-led tourism.

Held at Red Rocks Base Camp near Volcanoes National Park, the 14th edition will bring together local communities, tourism stakeholders, conservation voices and international visitors. The festival places residents at the centre of the experience, not only as performers but as people shaping the conversation around tourism and conservation.

Culture with a local voice
The programme opens with remarks from the Red Rocks Initiative team, local leaders and park authorities. It continues with heritage debates, conservation dialogues, traditional music, storytelling, Igisoro games, artisan workshops and youth innovation sessions. The festival also includes discussions on gorilla conservation, cultural ownership and sustainable eco-tourism policy.

Red Rocks Initiative for Sustainable Development describes itself as the strategic engine behind the Red Rocks ecosystem, with a focus on community empowerment, cultural preservation and environmental stewardship.

Relevance for travel trade
For international buyers and tourism partners, the festival offers a clear route into Rwanda’s experiential travel market. Its timing also gives agents a chance to connect cultural immersion with wildlife itineraries.
The week closes on 4 September with Kwita Izina-related activities and Red Rocks Twataramye, setting the stage for stronger community-based tourism partnerships in Rwanda.
