Inside Kinunu’s farm-to-cup coffee experience

This article is part of Rwanda First-Hand, a series based on my roundtrip through Rwanda in May 2026 as Chief Editor of Made in Rwanda TRIBUNE.

On the green shores of Lake Kivu, Kinunu Agroprocessing controls its coffee journey from the first seedling to the final export container.

The family-owned coffee farm and processing station sits in Rutsiro District in Rwanda’s Western Province. Its three-generation coffee legacy now supports a farm-to-cup model that combines specialty coffee, traceability and community impact.

From Amsterdam to Kinunu
I first connected with CEO Michaelle Kubwimana after Kawah Coffee participated in the Rwanda Coffee booth at the Amsterdam Coffee Festival in April 2026. Michaelle later invited me to visit Kinunu during my trip through Rwanda in May.

I stayed for two nights at Kinunu Wonders, the guesthouse within the coffee plantation. Lake Kivu stretched out below the property while the surrounding coffee fields shaped the rhythm of daily life. The setting offered more than a quiet place to sleep. It placed visitors inside the story of Rwandan coffee.

Blaise, a Kinunu Agroprocessing staff member, guided me through the farm, washing station and roasting process. His explanations followed each stage from crop to cup and showed how much knowledge, timing and care sit behind a finished bag of coffee.

Traceability from seed to export
Kinunu Agroprocessing manages every stage of production. This vertical control removes intermediaries and gives international buyers greater transparency across the supply chain.

The company also works directly with local farmers. Women make up 90% of these farmers. Kinunu provides fair compensation, health insurance and access to education initiatives, linking coffee production with practical community support.

Its international brand, Kawah Coffee, brings single-origin Rwandan coffee to global consumers. The brand connects flavour, origin and ethical sourcing while keeping the farm visible in every cup.

Coffee tourism with local roots
Kinunu Wonders adds another layer to this model. Guests can follow the coffee process, explore the plantation and learn about farm life while staying beside Lake Kivu.

For coffee professionals, buyers, students and travellers, Kinunu offers a direct view of how Rwanda grows, processes and presents specialty coffee to the world.

As Kinunu Agroprocessing and Kawah Coffee expand their reach, their farm-to-cup approach can strengthen Rwanda’s position in markets that value quality, traceability and origin.
