Rwanda’s Fruit Export Success: A Remarkable 80% Growth in One Year

Rwanda’s fruit export sector has achieved a significant milestone, with revenues soaring by an impressive 82.5% to $34.7 million (over Rwf52.6 billion) in the 2023/2024 fiscal year, according to the latest Statistical Year Book 2024 from the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda. This marks a substantial leap from the $19 million recorded in the previous fiscal year.

A diverse portfolio of over 10 fruit varieties has fueled this growth, with avocados emerging as a standout contributor, accounting for one-third of the total revenue. Avocado exports alone surged by nearly 74%, generating over $11 million (approx. Rwf15 billion) compared to $6.3 million (approx. Rwf8.6 billion) the year before. This reflects a remarkable 13-fold increase from $840,570 in 2019/2020.

Other key contributors include oranges ($3.9 million), ripe bananas ($1.6 million), and mangoes ($1.5 million).

Rwanda’s commitment to expanding its horticulture markets has been pivotal. Efforts such as securing buyers in the UAE and showcasing produce at international exhibitions have strengthened the country’s position as a competitive exporter.

With consistent growth over the past four years, Rwanda’s fruit export industry is poised for even greater achievements on the global stage.
