Grotta Resort expands Musanze’s tourism experience
Grotta Resort is turning Musanze’s volcanic landscape into a hospitality experience that connects accommodation with nature, local food and active travel.
I stayed at Grotta Resort during my May 2026 roundtrip through Rwanda as part of Made in Rwanda TRIBUNE’s Rwanda First-Hand series. The visit offered a first-hand look at how the resort combines its volcanic setting with accommodation, dining and organised experiences.
Set across 7.5 acres in northern Rwanda, the resort serves families, nature lovers and corporate groups. Its accommodation includes family rooms, a honeymoon chalet and nine rooms designed for business travellers. An event space also supports retreats, conferences and private celebrations.
A volcanic setting with a difference
The resort’s most distinctive feature is its natural cave system. A route extends about 150 meters underground and passes through different geological zones. Guests can choose a short scenic walk or an adventure route lasting up to one hour.
Beyond the caves, Grotta Resort offers cycling, hiking and wildlife-related experiences. Its location places guests close to Volcanoes National Park and the wider attractions of Rwanda’s volcanic highlands.
The grounds also include landscaped gardens, terraces, an animal farm and outdoor recreation areas. A swimming pool, hot tub, gym and sauna give guests space to recover after a day on the trails.
Local value through hospitality
Food forms another part of the experience. The resort’s restaurant serves local and international dishes while the Cave Café offers coffee, light meals and a gathering place near the cave entrance. The bar adds cocktails and Rwandan spirits to the evening programme.
Grotta Resort combines Rwanda’s natural assets with accommodation, dining and organised experiences. This approach encourages visitors to stay longer and spend across more services.
A full spa and wellness centre is scheduled to open in 2027, extending the resort’s contribution to Musanze’s growing tourism economy.
Rwanda First Hand
I stayed at Grotta Resort during my May 2026 roundtrip through Rwanda as part of Made in Rwanda TRIBUNE’s Rwanda First-Hand series. On the last day I left early in the morning for golden monkey tracking, which starts at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters, about a 20-minute drive from the resort.
Knowing I had an early departure, the staff prepared a full breakfast for me to take away. When I returned from the tracking experience, they immediately offered to clean my shoes. These thoughtful services showed how the resort supports guests before and after their outdoor adventures.
