Akagera National Park: Rwanda’s Remarkable Wildlife Comeback

Akagera National Park in the country’s northeast has become a powerful symbol of restoration and conservation. Founded in 1934, the park lost much of its wildlife and habitat in the 1990s, as resettlement and poaching took a heavy toll.

Since 2010, a partnership between the Rwandan Development Board and African Parks has revived Akagera, reintroducing lions, white rhinos, elephants, and giraffes to the acacia-covered savannahs and shimmering lakes of the Mutumba Hills. Today, Akagera is once again home to the Big Five and nearly 500 bird species, offering visitors a chance to experience Rwanda’s renewed wilderness and resilience.
